Il ruolo di geoSDI nella UN OpenGIS initiative
La Geospatial Information Section (UNGIS) e l'Information and Communications Technology Division (ICTD) dello United Nations Department of Field Support (DFS) hanno deciso di perseguire gli sforzi necessari per identificare il ruolo che le tecnologie geospaziali open source potrebbero svolgere a sostegno delle operazioni di pace delle Nazioni Unite, chiamando l'iniziativa UN OpenGIS.
L'iniziativa mira a sviluppare un sistema GIS enterprise utilizzando le soluzioni geospaziali libere ed open source a sostegno delle operazioni di pace delle Nazioni Unite.
Al fine di trasformare le idee e concetti in azioni concrete e di federare gli sforzi, un seminario tecnico di 5 giorni (6-10 Marzo 2016) è stato organizzato presso la United Nations Logistics Base (UNLB) in Brindisi, con la partecipazione attiva di esperti degli Stati Membri, le organizzazioni del mondo accademico e professionale, e le agenzie delle Nazioni Unite insieme a esperti GIS da operazioni di pace dell'ONU.
geoSDI, come Laboratorio del Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR) e Centro di Competenza per le Spatial Data Infrastructures, ha preso parte alla delegazione Italiana, partecipando agli incontri di pianificazione e mostrando esempi operativi di sistemi sviluppati con il framework Geo-Platform, come il Sistema Informativo Territoriale del Dipartimento della Protezione Civile della Presidenza del Consiglio dei Ministri in Italia e la Consolle di Early Warning per rischio Metereologico, sismico e incendi a supporto del WFP in Palestina.
Scopo dell'iniziativa OpenGIS delle Nazioni Unite è quello di individuare e sviluppare un pacchetto GIS Open Source che soddisfi i requisiti delle operazioni delle Nazioni Unite, sfruttando appieno le competenze dei partner (nazioni partner, partners tecnologici, organizzazioni internazionali, Università, ONG, settore privato).
Il Laboratorio geoSDI è dunque parte del gruppo di lavoro, in particolare per il task di definizione e implementazione della piattaforma di content management, data sharing, geospatial data visualization
e access management, da progettare in piena interoperabilità e compatibilità con i sistemi già esistenti presso gli uffici e le agenzie UN.

The Geospatial Information Section (UNGIS) and the Information and Communications Technology Division (ICTD) of the United Nations Department of Field Support (DFS) decided to pursue the necessary efforts to identify the role that open source geospatial technologies could play in support of peacekeeping operations of the United Nations, calling the initiative UN OpenGIS.
The initiative aims to develop an enterprise GIS system using geospatial free and open source solutions, in support of United Nations peacekeeping operations.
In order to turn ideas and concepts into concrete actions and to federate efforts, a 5-day technical seminar (6-10 March 2016) was organized at the United Nations Logistics Base (UNLB) in Brindisi, with the active participation of experts from Member States, the academic and professional organizations, and UN agencies along with GIS experts from the UN peacekeeping operations.
geoSDI, as laboratory of the National Council of Research of Italy (CNR) and the Competence Centre for Spatial Data Infrastructures, took part in the Italian delegation, participating in the planning meetings and showing examples of operating systems developed with Geo-Platform framework, such as the Geographic Information System of the Department of Civil Protection of the Prime Minister's Office in Italy and the Early Warning Console for Meteorological, Seismic and Fires risks, to support WFP in Palestine.
The aim of the OpenGIS the United Nations is to identify and develop a GIS Open Source package that meets the requirements of United Nations operations, taking full advantage of the expertise of partners (partner nations, technological partners, international organizations, universities, NGOs, industry private).
The Laboratory geoSDI is therefore part of the working group, particularly the task of defining and implementing the content management platform, data sharing, geospatial data visualization and access management, to plan for full interoperability and compatibility with existing systems at the offices and UN agencies.
